Bone & Joint Publishing partners with Molecular Connections to develop the online content discovery tool for Orthopaedics

Launching OrthoSearch 16 September 2021

London & Bangalore: Bone & Joint Publishing, the imprint of The British Editorial Society of Bone & Joint Surgery a registered UK Charity (No. 209299) established to advance and improve education in orthopaedic surgery and allied branches of surgery, has partnered with Molecular Connections, a global data science company, to develop a future-ready orthopaedic knowledge discovery (OKD) platform, with the objective of enabling the orthopaedic community to search across the literature and multimedia, and to customise and save searches in a new and unique way.

Using deep learning and advanced Machine Learning technologies & Molecular Connections’ (MC) proprietary platform MC OMNI™, experts from MC brought orthopaedic related content from the web into a “single intelligently searchable source” – delivering information from data and making search as easy-to-use and relevant as possible. The data sources include published literature, standards and guidelines, preprints, conference proceedings, clinical trial data and multimedia files that are all semantically tagged with a state of the art ontology, customised for the orthopaedic domain. The highly granular metadata from all the content assets including open source databases, has aided in delivering accurate insights for users and recommending relevant content, which could reduce research time and power future innovation.

The powerful, customised orthopaedic specific taxonomy is at the core of the platform (a world’s first) and enables broadcasting of relevant and specific search results, coupled with user engagement modules such as smart alerts, Altmetric scores, Impact Factors, EndNote and Mendeley integration, CiteScores and more. Its purpose is to provide relevancy to the orthopaedic community within searches that are often neglected by other taxonomies. OrthoSearch also makes previously undiscovered material discoverable with an ever-increasing index of content.

At the launch, Richard Hollingsworth, Managing Director of Bone & Joint Publishing, said, “We found an excellent partner in Molecular Connections to help us leverage our leadership position within the orthopaedic community and create a discovery tool that returns highly relevant search results to our users and improves engagement through customised alerts. We wanted to provide something very unique to the orthopaedic community”.

Emma Vodden, Director of Publishing added “We are very excited to launch OrthoSearch with our partner Molecular Connections. It was developed after many conversations within the orthopaedic community highlighted a need to bring more relevancy and specificity to search across the specialty as well as bringing in other content types to uncover previously hard to find content. OrthoSearch is a tool developed with great input from our community; this is something we will continue, to ensure its evolution meets the needs of our users”.

Voicing his opinion, Jignesh Bhate, CEO of Molecular Connections, said, “An orthopaedic specific ontology, was crucial to drive traffic and usage to OrthoSearch. The creation and enrichment of which was aided by ML modules. This unique search engine will revolutionize the way orthopaedic content is consumed and delivered. It has indexed hundreds of Orthopeadic related journals, standards and guidelines, video files, podcasts – all in one easy to use portal – and above all – it’s free”.
