Molecular Connections partners with AIAA to improve content discoverability

PRESS RELEASE | Bangalore, INDIA  2020

Molecular Connections and the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) recently partnered to improve content discoverability by generating high-quality metadata and building a custom ontology for AIAA’s electronic archive, Aerospace Research Central (ARC), which is hosted by Atypon.

Molecular Connections applied its proprietary machine learning and artificial intelligence technologies to identify 20+ broad concepts from the AIAA corpus (>100,000 research articles). The concepts were further semantically enriched to build a comprehensive set of domain-relevant terms along with a granular taxonomy covering almost 25,000 terms. Capturing concepts and synonyms in the public domain contributed to improving search, discoverability, browsing, and indexing of content within ARC and also on the web.

The quality of the taxonomy was manually validated by subject matter experts and the entire process concluded in less than three months. As new content is published by AIAA, the taxonomy will learn and update itself on a real-time basis, and each new publication will be semantically tagged and enriched with renewed taxonomy terms.

Commenting on the pace of the project, Heather Brennan, AIAA Director of Publications, said, “We are very pleased with the partnership with Molecular Connections and the short time frame needed to make a positive impact on the discoverability of our publications. Through the use of a comprehensive and proprietary human-assisted artificial intelligence platform, their taxonomy management system MCLEXICON™, they have accelerated the development of a brand-new aerospace taxonomy that is highly granular and customized to our content.

Mr. Jignesh Bhate, CEO, added: “The AIAA data is very complex and interdisciplinary in nature. With the newly developed taxonomy, the content in ARC can be indexed and tagged with utmost granularity on the entire article, including figures. In the future, the concepts extracted using Molecular Connections’ platform MCLEXICON™ can form the basis of a wide range of applications to publishing workflows, including recommendation systems, classifier, identifying peer reviewers, building subject collections and more.

Search and retrieval of precisely relevant articles from a publisher’s website and from external public search engines impacts a publisher’s business significantly. AIAA has proactively adopted technology that will yield positive results well into the future.
